Still Alive

WHERE DID YOU GO?

I flatter myself by thinking you are asking this question.  I am writing a book of and about porn.

IS IT ANY GOOD?

Not sure.  I am trying my best.  It's a lot of work, complicated by relentless self-doubt.  The good news is I am drinking more.

ALMOST DONE?

Yes, guy who asks all the right questions.

WILL YOU THEN RETURN TO THE BLOG?

Yes.  The blog is very good practice.

IN THE MEANTIME, DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY OF YOUR OLD POSTS?

No.  Read at your own risk/tolerance, I distance myself from everything older than, say, the last four or five posts.  Everything else is thinking out loud, work in progress.  I could go back and try to revise the old posts, but there's no point.  Life is change, have to keep moving forward.

IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR TWO...?

The Second Story of Echo and Narcissus and The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

WHY A BOOK?

I didn't want to put a porn story on the blog, I felt there should be a buffer.  Wait-- are you asking me why I didn't just shoot a sex tape?  Huh.

SO YOU WROTE AN ACTUAL PORN STORY?

Yes.

HARDCORE PORN?

Yes.

IS IT HETERONORMATIVE?

Sigh.

The book is in two parts. The first part is a straight up porn short story.  There's penis and vagina and lots of cum/ming.  I have deliberately not written the story "well", whatever that means, I am imitating the flow and style of that kind of story. I didn't try to make it sensual or unusual; while it is hard core pornography it is a fairly vanilla story-- boy vs. girl, no vampires, no one dies-- obvious in its language and plot and etc. My goal wasn't to elevate the genre but to photograph it.  I did this so that you could assure yourself that there is nothing meaningful there, no symbolism-- just explicit porn.  And then to business.

DO YOU TRY TO EXPLAIN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF PORN?

No.  It's not the deconstruction of a text, it is the interpretation of a dream.  I make no attempt to explain what porn means in general, only what it means to you.

HOW CAN YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO ME?

The important thing is to say whatever comes to mind.

"I am writing a book of and about porn."

Of course! If you are an American that's just about all you can write about!

The other day I was asked in a meeting, "what do is the singlemost important American value"

I answered: Porn.

People looked at me with disgust thinking I was promoting it.

I was like "People, as soon as I turned 18 I left this country for one with culture so that I could finally learn some culture and become cultured. Do you really think I embrace American values as my own?"

Book title, "Sadly, Porn."

Sort of reassuring/sad to see you admit to relentless self-doubt.

"I'll make no attempt to explain what porn means in general, only what it means to you." Your whole blog feels this way. It's a hard perspective to adopt. Worse, you can only be so general or specific. So you will always have readers who come to watch you admonish others. Or who they delude themselves into thinking are the others. But as you say, "Read at your own risk/tolerance."

Hi Alone,

Someone's probably already told you about this, but have you seen Channel 4's Pornography: A Secret History of Civilisation.

I'm reading D. M. Thomas' The White Hotel which sounds similar to what you're working on, if you invert the lyricism and a couple of other things that are the point of the work. :P

Keep your liver viable til publication please, and thank you for the recommendation of The Boy who Cried Wolf as I have missed that post in my reintroduction to your highly enjoyable blog.

He writes as a modern day Kierkegaard. For the one and only one he calls his dear reader. The infinitely concerned subject.

To explain anything objectively leaves you with an out. And there will always be another explanation around the corner to diligently concern yourself with. To explain anything subjectively defeats the purpose entirely and it can't be done. So one is forced in a socratic manner to help you give birth to the idea yourself.

Sort of like a plain, behind the scenes midwife. Of course, the more she stands out, the more you assign her a role and the more you thank or curse her for the way she plays that role. Which is to say the less you notice the birth of an idea that may be your very own. Which is also to say quite possibly and more than likely your first very own thought.

I know. You thought you should have had many of those by now. But you were wrong.

...it is the interpretation of a dream.

If you have ever read the ancients who interpreted dreams you realize that there was never THE answer that only they had. The good ones, I will just go ahead and call them prophets explained what it meant for the King or whoever was the main character looking for an interpretation.

Since you are a narcissist, you can't help reading everything as pertaining to you, the lead character.

In this way Alone is able to address you quite directly without seeming to because you walk into it like you do every scene, as center stage. But to just give you the answer like an answer to a math problem would not help. It would actually be counterproductive. As you would inevitably come to the conclusion that an answer, the answer, actually exists.

Thanks for the blog, Alone; it's been both helpful and problematic. I've been depressed and anxious for as long as I can remember. A while back, when it finally got so bad I could do nothing but confront it, I decided to start seeing a psychologist. Given how effective this blog was at explaining my difficulties with relationships, I decided to look for someone that took a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approach to treatment.

But then I thought about what you wrote again, and chose a solutions-focused/CBT practitioner instead.

Would Narcissus spend his time hounding celebrities on Twitter, instead of critiquing the instructors at the cloister? Would Goldmund backpack through Southeast Asia, coming to love ladyboys with all of their unique qualities?

Whatever the book is about, I'm bummed merely that there *is* a book, because book-writing seems to break bloggers. Waiter Rant lost all purpose and appeal when he stopped being a waiter and started being a writer. Ditto Belle de Jour with prostitution. Cleolinda was never the same afterwards, either, nor the Pioneer Woman, and who the hell is reading April Winchell's work now that Regretsy is gone?

Those were the first few that came to mind, but there have been many others, enough that I now groan sadly whenever a blogger announces their book, it is a herald of the end.

I hope Alone can prove me wrong.

July 12, 2013 3:38 PM | Posted by Harry Horton: | Reply

ROllo May stated the the most useful barometer of western civilization dying out is porn. The end of an historical era, the modern era is. THis phase of western civilization draws to a close, as Rollo may notes, a western civilization splinters up, receding further adrift in a valueless sea of anxiety and grievous loss of its once underlying myth's and value's vitalities. He made reference to the last time this dying out of a civilization occurred with Europe, thus was in Europe in the 1300s. England and the Black Death happened then. Where the cultural conditions got so bad that it was highly questionable England would survive. They had famines due to environmental warming at that time. People were down to eating cats and dogs, at that time where today there are some college course one can take where students can explore their experiences of having sex with cats and dogs. Yale for example. Both are probably barometers of culture's end. Also Barbara Tuchman's book: A Distant Mirror too, is a historical investigation of the end of the Middle Ages that dies out and eventually gives way to a new world ahead, the Renaissance. That is around the 1300s-1400s. They are two good areas to check out---Rollo may's Love and WIll and secondly the Tuchman book. Rollo May explores sex and death, the daimonic, and the banalization of sex in cultural media and entertainment, along with the increasing meaninglessness in psychotherapy patient's lives. Also meaninglessness in modren art over the past 120 years or so is related by Rollo May and how the essence of modern art meaninglessness evidently is the same for what is found in the psychotherapy patient's state of being of anxiety. In the Love and WIll book and his COurage to Create Book, sex and creativity and civilzation's end are two subject areas explored by Rollo may.

Also the institution of marriage started to dissipate in the 1300s Middle Ages decline and dying out period. The plague took young lives and left the old immune to its effects. A strange situation in that the viable younger groups of children and young adults all died from its effects, while the older citizens appeared to weather & survive the Black Death. For whatever the scientific reasons for that is, I don't know. Environmental warming was present during that time like it is today. But its interesting that sexual activity became more looser and open with marriage's dissolvement during the 1300s. Something that exists today with the breakdown of the cultural and social mores and customs. And such 1300s dissolvement of the institution of marriage occurred with the dying out of the Middle Ages. Thus a porn situation came into being perhaps to whatever extent with marriage's denoument at that time. The historian Huizinga also give portraits of what life was like during the middle ages when the era was dying out. I can't remember his book though, its title that is.

Speaking of porn and TLP, I was recently watching an interview with one female porn star who claimed that she liked giving blowjobs because they felt empowering. Unlike intercourse, she could control the pleasure she was giving.

I couldn't help but be reminded TLP's "No Self-Respecting Woman Should Go Without Make-up" article. Talk about a woman allured by the "trappings of power"! Maybe one day she'll be a senator.

Anyway author, thanks for the blog. I don't agree with your world view, but reading it has certainly changed mine over the years.

I'm fascinated by the ongoing impact of porn on society. Every male under 25 is addicted to pornography, and has been since their early teens. I'm loath to predict the effect of this on their behavior and thinking, but we should expect one.

Anyone dated a 20 year old recently? The things girls consistently expect you to want in bed these days make me uncomfortable. Because they are oriented to visual spectacle over mutual pleasure. In the 00s, we had tie and tease, which can be nice, but these days, a girl expects you to want to choke her. I'm presuming there is a push matching this pull from the guys.

But that's the effect I'm least interested in. Just the most obvious. I'm seeing a wave of males who stay home (often with parents) into their 30s, indulging their addiction. I wonder if, with their sexual needs met, with their sex drive suppressed by thrice daily indulgence, they don't need conventional achievement to win them a woman (which has historically been a major motivator). They give up on... everything really, happy to live in a cycle of gathering porn they don't use, and using porn that must always be different from the last, wherever that leads.

Whether you are a rat in the race, or a chimp pressing the pleasure button, the matrix has you, right? The thing you seek is symbolic, is an imitation of the real that you may not even remember exists. So I can't judge.

Would you be so kind as to blog about the raging narcissism that has been demonstrated with the recent NSA revelations? Too many individuals seems to think they are interesting enough for a government agency to waste analyst hours on them.

Why do you presume narcissism? It's seems as if they're indirectly telling you something but you're not listening.

In a world choking on universal lies where everyone is exploiting their own (is there another kind of exploitation?), it gets a little comical when paranoia is sneered at. It's not really paranoid to presume that people who are lying have something to hide; suspicion of those who fail to provide transparency is hardly unwarranted.

How is it that you know what dark and creepy shit is going on in the private lives of individuals (who might not even know the half of what they do themselves, what with this traumatised species' propensity to rewrite history in near real time)? When someone values their privacy, logic suggests they have a reason to be alarmed.

"If they're doing something fucked up, the government needs to know about it."

I don't think power 'works' that way. There is no capital in making arrests; you don't gain power by throwing it away. Power is accumulated not by arresting those who do wrong but by not arresting them; if it were up to power, the wrongdoing would continue. It is for this reason that you are on the side of those who want privacy from surreptitious surveillance (no matter how heinous their crimes are).

The more heinous the crime, the more compromised they'll be. Only poor or innocent (or very unlucky) people are arrested in this world. Though it isn't often discussed, the Church doesn't arrest anyone. They prefer to forgive. I don't think they forget.

A cure for being a corrupted Toddler? They imagine what is obvious to them should be obvious to anyone; because it's obvious to them.

How could you not know? They know without even thinking about it. That's how obvious it is.

Maybe you're insane? The corrupted Toddler knows that everything they don't understand is insane.

They understand sex (they hate sex!) as sex is their sole interest; in fact, if they're not having sex or preparing to have sex or doing something that will enable them to have sex, they'll be irritable and belligerent.

They also enjoy lying because - *teehee* - lying is so much FUN!

The only cure for being a malicious Toddler is growing up. That is unlikely to occur for as long as their johns keep paying.

Grow up? How?

Sink or swim? Growing up is a function of understanding and learning, independence, Self-reliance and a total absence of need. It's the need that enslaves.

"Fear nothing. Depend on no one. Only when you reject all help are you freed."
- the Buddha

I'm still working on growing up and can't see how I ever will; I'm too damaged, too scarred, too susceptible to Maya (illusion, enchantment, corruption). I still need so I'm still broken but I know a few truths.

That's how I started growing up; as my mood crashed from artificial high (love) to artificial low (betrayal), my perceived reality was drastically altered in front of my eyes (from delusional to delusional but I saw truth in the shattered illusion and the subsequent realisation that I knew nothing). Human minds are broken with lies accepted as truth; it stands to reason they can be fixed by learning truth over the lies. Lies reduce, truth should heal and allow for growth but I dunno really.

I think Alone knows. This book might be a game changer.

I'm pretty sure the Buddha knew. This is what I understand of the Buddha's light. I think my interpretation is right. The logic just seems too perfect to be wrong.

therawness.com is written by a seemingly very sharp guy but an otherwise excellent essay on shame equalling immaturity which fails to address either;
a) girls being slut-shamed by women for being true to their biological desire; or
b)clothes and how clothes come to be worn by toddlers?

His stuff on narcissism is pretty good but NPD, BPD, ASPD and all mental disorders that don't have a purely genetic basis are the product of mothers who do not want children so much as they need dependants. You only have to look at how mothers feel about genetic retardation carrier status to get a glimpse of the truth about their motives (they're not having children for the sake of the child). They're pro-Life (pro-Pain) because they are breeding in need. Children (and men) are supposed to suffer to please them.

Attitudes toward fragile X mutation carrier testing from women identified in a general population survey.

The most salient finding of this work is the apparent lack of relevance of carrier status to these women. Many expressed that although the information could be relevant in the future, it is not relevant at this stage of their lives in terms of family planning (either with respect to having unaffected offspring or to premature ovarian failure) and personal relationships. Although issues of abortion seemed prominent in the focus groups, we found that carrier status did not have an apparent effect on women's attitudes about termination.

It's not relevant to them. They were already planning to retard the minds of their children with lies and emotional poison to make them dependent so retarded children suit mothers who need children just fine.

"Perhaps it's empowering to be in control of the sex?

Saw that HBO special on the changing ways of female sexuality, the one where they followed the family with the 13 year old girl and her friends. Mom and dad don't care what she does, "as long as she's in control of her sexuality."
Then they talk to a stripper who says she's in complete control of her sexuality, she does the dance, gets the money, the guys look and pay and don't even get to touch her.

Which makes me wonder if women being "in control of their own sexuality" isn't just a joke, but one that requires men to give up all control over their own sexuality. The guys don't get to touch the stripper, let alone screw her. They get to pay, go home and masturbate to the memory. Guys don't get to hoot and holler at sluttily dressed teenagers on the street. They don't get to rape beautiful women at bars or clubs who won't give them the time of day.

To the extent that women have control over their sexuality, it's always given to them by men.

nothing meets the eye with TLP, so I'm sure this is connected vaguely/explicitly with his continous theme of cultural narcicissm. Essentially, in my mind, porn is a symbolic replacement of the "real" (sic: Lacan, Baudrillard) intended to placate, entertain, and above all preserve the ego of the masses (is the mass ego basically the superego?)(and because our culture is overtly sexually "hidden" -- read: "repressed" -- is porn basically the selfshaming dynamic inherent to the negation, albeit PRESERVATION of the superego? i'm guessing this has got more to do with mass media than D in V action.

The important thing is to say whatever comes to mind

It occurred to me that this repetitive suggestion found throughout TLP's opus is of course the key.

Because the meaning of a movie, doctrine, book, ideology is not in what "they" say (whoever they may be) but what it means to me. And the only way to determine what it means to me is... to say whatever comes to mind.

When I do that for myself I am at the very least stirring up subjective truth for myself (the how) over an illusive, always-up-for-debate objective truth (the what).

When I use my narcissism for good, that is to allow the many voices inside me that are trying to interpret my identity from the outside, have their own say, I can learn from them.

I suspect that Alone's insights are partially obtained by giving the voices in his own head full on, developed characters. Reread a post like "Part 2 The Limits of Control: The Dream" and imagine the female character as being made up by Alone. As a conversation Alone is having with himself via the character he/she has created to get at the many sides that an issue presents. Or how one minute Alone sounds convincingly like a male and in the next most definitely female.
Hell, for all we know, PastaBagel is Alone and Alone is Pastabagel.

Does it really matter?
I can't answer that for you. I know today what my answer is.

All this also aligns nicely with Alone's post titled "God's cheat code for accuracy". Read it.

That cheat code being the "wisdom of narcissism", or to hone in on what we excel at most... just to "pretend you are someone else".

You're absolutely right to pull this out as a key element of his writing...but it isn't TLP's idea. It's the central tenet of all psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories. The rorschach inkblot test works exactly the same way. So does dream analysis.

The important part being that the objective content gives us something to project the unconscious onto, and to make it evident and open to examination.

And thus Alone sailed towards an unattainable goal. Forgetting his own words of wisdom (https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2009/12/how_to_create_motivation_for_2.html) he set forth to complete a masterpiese. Maybe Alone is annoying us into action. Teasing us with a book as a way of spurring us into doing that thing, you know, that one thing you yourself have been meaning to do. If only xyz would happen first, you would get that thing done.

As your annoyance with Alone's sporadic posts and ever finalizing book, you begin to overlook xyz and just start doing.

Perhaps.

Alone is following Nietzsche's prescription to writers. That is Nietzsche's style. He writes only for you, only for the reader who is reading him, and the reader reads him singularly. Avoiding what Baudrillard calls the "psychological swamp of interpretation."

Disagree with your reading of Lacan and Baudrillard on porn. Porn is "produced" sex - in the Order of Production. Meaning it is irreversible and metastasizes. Seduction is in the Symbolic Order and you "cannot produce seduction," which is reversible depending on challenge. The "real" is being stolen in homeopathic doses. Baudrillard's The Perfect Crime. The movie Don Jon is a movie about this: http (colon) //books (dot)google (dot) com/books/about/The_Words_to_Say_it (dot)html?id=cDwPAAAACAAJ This fucking software!

If I were you, I'd flatter myself constantly.

This post, especially the title, remind me of something special. Guess it's kind of a secret, but I don't really know.

- Where am I?
I'm somewhere wondering why people - you, they, I - should use metaphors, hints, doublespeak and to conceal our primary.

The following does not contain any concealed thoughts, it is as specific as I'm able to without compromising anyone.

-----
There is this guy. In my imagination, which may or may not be accurate, he is suspicious. He want to to know more about the Truth, but dare not reveal it. To ask openly would be like crossing a point of no return, which is an uncomfortable thought to him. He is afraid of people. At the same time he is a person of integrity, so it isn't exactly appealing for him to communicate an affinity for democrats to me and republicans to his wife. So, he need an out, which is precisely the end metaphors serve for him, an out. Think plausible deniability.

What do you think about it? Does it have a realistic sound to it? Does it agree with your sensitive reasoning?
------

I'm flattering myself but in case you're wondering, I plan to approach him three times. Of course I make road on the go but I plan to first address his fear, then cultivate his curiosity and at last be explicit even if it only involve a minuscule namedrop.

Please comment someone. I'm asking because I suspect that particular individual to be representative for millions. I'd be thrilled if Alone would comment, but it seems like he hasn't contributed with a comment since the days of napoleon. It's a shame since most people regard him as the focal point of the history of learning, I guess. I like the smartness but what really captivate me is the flashes of passion, like "psychiatry is war" just to mention one of the numerous. It feel like witnessing something dramatic, like seeing something you'll never be able to forget, not that you'd want to. After reading, it become a part of you.

Yeah boring. I guess he won't accept a compliment for real unless he can smell it. Speaking of compliment...hmmm. Something came up. Ah no - complement, that's different. I'm sorry. Confused. All sort of thoughts is floating around all over. Never mind, proceed. Please. Ahh screw me and end life. It feels like being shot for something that never happened. I don't want people to see things from my perspective. Never mind, focus on the main point. The first point.
