Brilliant stuff!

I am currently revisiting Greek mythology and trying to think about the stories as warnings, as case studies. Thanks for the insight.

I love the fact that a child was the narrator (toying around with authority, eh?) and that song is just gorgeous. I'm looking forward to seeing the video. Great job. I also hope that the idea of a book is still under consideration.

Note that the author had to tell you to enrich him before it crossed your mind. Guess he just wasn't worthy enough before.

Does Alone value the movies he downloads freely? Does he mock the people in the industry who are also trying to make a buck? Since he advocates piracy should he also take a cue from his child and grow up? Did you value Alone's writings before this audio file, or did you dismiss them because they were free?

I cannot believe there is such discussion over the goddamn 2 dollars. He feeds you in his on way, with words and ideas and a community of sorts. Somebodies should be feeding him back. Quibbling at all over 2 dollars is bad form. It reflects only on those who do it, says nothing about Alone one way or another. Sniping at all about it is biting the hand that's fed for a long time. Maybe it was more light-hearted ribbing than I realize and if so I apologize. I think the idea he's creating employment (I hope the child who read got paid) with this is fantastic.

I don't know if I believe shrinks when they say they do or don't have kids or a spouse. I mean, when i taught preschool I invented kids and a spouse so that people would listen to me when I talked to them about their children, they'd take me seriously. But if I were a shrink, I'd lose the spouse and kids fast, since the nature of it seems so intense, screw at times, personal anyway that I would want to keep them as safe as possible- by pretending they didn't exist, if necessary. On the other hand, to a lot of people nothing says 'stable and normal' like a spouse and kids, so I don't know. Is that weird?

Alone responded to my tweet and said "Do I sound old enough to have kids?" which felt a tad manipulative, since the timeframe he has vaguely outlaid here for his med school career and being a Gen Xer make him obviously old enough for kids. Yeah, being 35-45 age range is usually old enough to have bred. Why you throwing us off your trail?

What's weirder is if he didn't have kids and he plucked this VO child actor from central casting; either that or this child is his niece or nephew? A friend's kid? How long did the coaching take to get the emphasis right? Did Alone himself recite the piece with the appropriate emphasis added and then had the voice actor rehearse and record it?

Very helpful website. Important to remember that it may bring up painful memories or feelings and to make a point of being kind and gentle to yourself if you look at it and it does so.

27 is very young and being authentic is a lifetime task even if there is a particular concern with it in the younger years. Better to look at it now like an aware human being than to wait until you're older and feel as if you missed out on experiences you would have liked to have had. There is an opportunity in that you recognize you feel this way now.

I noticed that her cadence was extremely close to what I hear in my head when I read this blog. So the last scenario you mentioned is plausible. Or if she is his niece, and he speaks anything like he writes, maybe she's picked up on his idiosyncrasies and instinctively knew how to perform the piece the same way he would.

But why are we putting so much effort into speculating about all this? We don't really want to unmask the Batman. We want the unmasking to always be in the future. So I'm gonna shut up and get back to reading Fear and Trembling now.

Interesting night, had two encounters that almost resulted in blows, one of which did, the other was with a semi-good friend. Then my girlfriend gave me a variation of that "God, you are toxic" speech, which I think might help some...as I am trying to solve it too:

basically, when ego is so big that your identity is so attached to you - and then you make judgements, a lot of them, because you are right (you can't be wrong - I suppose because if you are wrong about X, then may be Y, and then what are you right about?!) So, in a nutshell, you are a shitty person and people don't want someone to judge them.

meaning not being nice, not being tolerant.. not being patient.

I don't fucking know, why this attachement? Why so many questions about basic human interrelations. Where was I when this was taught in school?

If narcissists are the scourge of the world nowadays, borderlines are the ones who get dinner ready so they can keep on scourging.

Interesting view of Narciss... (Below threshold)

August 8, 2012 3:09 AM | Posted by BTSTU: | Reply

Interesting view of Narcissus, I guess that's why I always loved Greek "mythos" because they felt like true warnings, although I never ever even thought of thinking how deep the implications each story 'could' have, which led me to attribute most of the bizarre aspects of each mythos as simply an interesting desire for the Greeks to be creative with realities presented to us by life (it was just their style period).

However, when you put Narcissus's and Echo's story into that perspective, with the implications of how they were raised affecting them and the fact that ultimately what matters is that they could have changed their destinies but didn't, I can't help but wonder if that's the whole point of the story...a lot of us follow a different yet similar path to that of Narcissus (or should I say Narcissus wasn't as unique a character as we like to think), but maybe LIKE Narcissus himself we have the luxury of having Nemesis look at [us] even through stories to remind us that there lies danger in looking at ourselves/fantasying (that powerful last revealing part the little girl let us experience).

In any case, this was an interesting piece shrink. 2 bucks, not too expensive. Kudos to the little kid, she did well I hope she can use this as a project for school to teach the other children about what happens to those who obsess about how evil, beautiful, good, intelligent, dumb, quiet, talkative, funny, observative, charismatic, angry, strong, weak they are.

Hymn to Nemesis
By Mesomedes of Crete
Translated by A.Z. Foreman

Nemesis, winged tilter of scales and lives,
Justice-spawned Goddess with steel-blue eyes!
Thou bridlest vain men who roil in vain
Against Thy harsh adamantine rein.
Great hater of hubris and megalomania,
Obliterator of black resentment,
By Thy trackless, churning, wracking wheel
Man's glinting fortunes turn on earth.
Thou comest in oblivion's cloak to bend
The grandeur-deluded rebel neck,
With forearm measuring out lifetimes
With brow frowning into the heart of man
And the yoke raised sovereign in Thy hand.
Hail in the highest, O justice-queen

Nemesis, winged tilter of scales and lives,
Immortal Resenter! I sing Thy song,
Almighty Payback on proud-spread wings,
Lieutenant of fairness, Requiter of wrongs.
Despise the lordly with all Thine art
And lay them low in the Nether-dark.

The Original:

On twitter, Alone posted about the younger generations needing to unlearn everything about self-esteem.

Recently, teen idol Justin Bieber made a statement saying that Prince William should use chemical treatment on his receding hairline, and that he doesn't understand why he hasn't already.

So my question is, does Alone's idea that the perception of others is very important support Bieber's statement?
Why, or why not?

Be weary of anyone who claims to have a prescription for "the" problem or your problem.

TLP has his reasons for rejecting certain aspects of American and western culture. These reasons are his and his alone. He may claim that the younger generations "need" to do this or "ought" to do that, just as a Christian will say we "need" to be right with God.

The fact is that one cannot derive an ought from an is. Nobody "needs" to do anything. People who prescribe these oughts for other people are merely projecting themselves on the rest of society.

TLP talks a lot about how narcissism is bad and such. But make no mistake -- there is nothing wrong with being a narcissist. It is only TLP's opinion that such things are undesirable.
